Google Chrome and your photoblog

September 8th, 2008 by brett

By now, I am sure that you’ve all heard about chrome, and maybe quite a few of you have already downloaded it and started to use it as another browser in your arsenal.  I read somewhere that Chrome has already captured any from 1-4% of all browser traffic which is amazing when you consider how long that it has been publicly available.

I have two questions for everyone,

1 - How much traffic on your photoblog is coming from Chrome?

Here’s an example of what I am seeing on this blog, pretty amazing that Chrome has managed to do in such a short period of time,

2 - Does your photoblog look like it should in Chrome?  So far, I haven’t seen any issues in my photoblog, has anyone?

Mastering Color by Ben Willmore

September 4th, 2008 by brett

If you remember, I posted earlier about Kelby Training’s recent seminar stop in Toronto and how much I enjoyed the day. Ben’s presentation is just awesome and if you get a chance to go and see Ben speak, I would highly recommend. I decided after listening to Ben that I would pick up his Mastering Color DVD to hopefully augment my new mastery of colour! After all, since everyone seems to have a photoblog nowadays you need to find a way to stand out from the crowd. Adding photoshops skills to your toolbox cannot hurt.

Photoblogs: Subscribers area?

September 2nd, 2008 by brett

It seems to me that I am constantly thinking about methods of monetization for photoblogs and something struck me this afternoon. How about introducing a “subscribers” a.k.a “true fans” section to your existing photoblog? This type of thing has existed for ages in other parts of the web so why doesn’t something similar exist in the photoblog world? Here’s what I am thinking – you create a members only section of your photoblog where you provide subscribers with extra-value in exchange for a small bit of information about who they are, and what they like to look at.

Photoblog SEO : Time to get serious

August 27th, 2008 by brett

This is the first post in a series about using SEO to improve traffic to your photoblog.

I think that I am making a fair statement when I say that the majority of traffic that arrives at most photoblogs is from comments made on other photoblogs. While this is a proven method of generating traffic, wouldn’t your time be better spent processing new images or actually behind the camera?

Amazon S3: Storage for photoblogs

August 20th, 2008 by brett

I spent some time today contemplating the two biggest issues that face photobloggers as their photoblogs 1) start to grow and 2) more people find out about them.  The first problem is the space requirements associated with storing all your images on your hosting account. Simply put, photos take up space. This isn’t a problem when you are getting started, but as you continue to add images to your photoblog space can quickly become an issue. Add to this that there seems to be a “size arms race” when it comes to the sizes of images people are publishing and you can see how this is going to become a problem for quite a few folks in the near future.

Evolution of the photoblog

August 18th, 2008 by brett

Last night, I had received a great email from a reader, and it really got me thinking about blogging and in particular photoblogs.

“…folks who visit my photoblog regularly and comment are generally those whose blogs I previously visited and commented on first.”

Learn photoshop from a master

August 13th, 2008 by brett

If I asked you to make a list of your favourite photobloggers, I am sure that Chromasia would show up on that list at some point, and if I felt like betting on it, I bet that it would show up quite high.  David has been running a tutorial program where he lets you peer into how he uses photoshop to create the images that we all know and love.  I signed up ages ago, and continue to look forward to the new tutorials and use the existing ones as a constant reference.  I recommend that you check it out Chromasia Photoshop Tutorials
I am sure that you won’t be disappointed in the results.

** UPDATE: Demand for Photoshop tutorials by chromasia has been so high that David is going to raise the prices for the tutorials in order to offset his increased hosting costs. Sign up now before the price increase! **
