Giving it away – following my own advice

September 14th, 2009 by brett

So a few posts back now, I mentioned reading about Trent Reznor’s suggestion about giving away your work in order to build a fan-base with the hopes of parlaying (don’t you just love that word?) the folks who take the time to register and download your stuff into raving fans who in the future would be willing to pay for other work.  After a bit of head-banging, cursing (only a little), and several late nights at the keyboard, I managed to modify my pixelpost photoblog to do just that.

I’ve started the process with a single image in a few sizes, so the implementation of the idea is slightly limited right now, but I always preach about just doing something so it’s a start.

I made my decision on which image to use and sizes to offer based on data from Google Analytics.  I added the iPhone and Blackberry sizes just because I thought it would be cool.

Suggestions and comments are always welcome!

I really like how you integrated it on the photoblog. I know you only posted about this 3 days ago, but have you noticed anything?

I like the idea, I am just not sure how it might work. How does it know what type of size to present the person once they have provided the information? Or do you have to manually email the file to them later?

I’ve been trying to think of something to provide as incentive for newsletter signup. I created a different approach using an animoto video but still think I need to provide something else to encourage them to sigh-up. I could see once they sign up presenting them with a page that you’ve added a link to the file for download. Then you just have to update the list of files for the new signups. I am considering a variation on this now. A variation that allows me to be more creative, so it becomes a win win win.

Kinda curious about my initial questions though still if you care to explain more.

Hi Brett.. I just read about the same advice yesterday on another site. I think that is a great idea and I will also do the same in the future. I am waiting to buy my first good camera to shoot stock photos and also photos for my graphic work, so then the photos will be my own. Good Luck with your fan base.. ok : )

It is a great idea, giving away different sized pictures. It would be interesting to know how you modified pixelpost to do this. Some pointers please..

Wonderful on all accounts. Great site here, great Pixelpost fotoblog, very cool way to integrate the idea of a give-away image (inverted or reflected marketing!) into the fotoblog, and very neat images indeed. I just came across your blog, but I’m glad I found it.

I might follow the advice at my other blog (Exposure-Latitudes.com, still in the works) just for fun.

    Thanks again,
