Book Review: Welcome to Oz, Vincent Versace

January 10th, 2008 by brett

This has to be one of the best, if not the best photography book that I have come across in what seems to be a very, very long time. Digital photography is at an all-time high as far as popularity goes, and I don’t see it slowing down anytime soon, just have a walk through your local mall and see how many folks are carrying digital SLRs for some proof. A side effect of this popularity is that everyone wants to cash in on the trend and before you know it there are more photograpy books than you can shake a stick at on the shelves of your favourite book store. It’s a shame that most of them are just rip-offs of each other.

Vincent’s book is a refreshing departure from the standard digital photography book out there and I guarntee that it will add at least a little surge of creativity to your work. The book is eay to read with clear step-by-step instructions and lots of images to help you along the way. Versace’s editing skills are second to none, and I found that I was enjoying the book based on it’s images alone, how many other photobooks can you say that about?! It even comes with a CD which contains all the demo images in the book which really helped out when I got stuck on a few of the more advanced techniques covered in the book.

I can’t recommend Welcome to Oz enough, if I had some sort of catchy rating system, I would say 4.5/5 cameras. If you find you’re stuck in a bit of a rut, or your blog images all look the same, I would recommend picking up a copy today it’s well worth your hard earned cash!

Know of a photography book that you just love? Or have you written one yourself and would like me to review it. Post a comment and I will do a review.

Brett

    Hi Brett,

I have looked at this book twice, last time as late as yesterday at our local mall. It’s quite pricy here in Australia and since I have a habit of buying A LOT of photography books (and the bookshelves are over crowded) it takes some convincing for me to make new purchases. I agree it looks like a fresh approach. Now I’m gonna have to go and take a third look!

    Cheers,
    Thomas

@Thomas: I agree 100% - since the rise of digital photography I am sure that the cost of photography related books has gone up! Same way that computer books do.

If you can find room in your bookshelf - this would be a great addition
