A photoblogger profile of David Nightingale of Chromasia fame. The first in a monthly series of photoblogger profiles.

I recently purchased and downloaded the DVD tutorial From Camera to Print from luminous landscape and thought that other photobloggers out there may be interested in what I thought. 

First, the production quality is top-notch, both the audio and video are very clear - keep in mind that this type of quality means large files so depending on what type of Internet connection you have, it may take you awhile to download the entire series.  There are a total of 24 episodes condensed into 7 .zip files - so grab a drink, and your favourite photography magazine and relax for a bit.

The information that is provided during the tutorial sessions is good, but I would have liked to seen less on the hardware end (i.e. printers) and more on the hands-on side.  A perfect example of this is when they are describing how to colour calibrate your monitor.  Although the basics are provided if you have never done this before you may still be confused on exactly how you should do it.

Jeff Schewe’s knowledge of fine-art printing is second to none and it shows during the tutorials.  He provides enough basic info to get your started, and even some really geeked out stuff for those colour geeks we all know. 

If your setup allows you to, I would recommend having Adobe Lightroom, and/or Adobe Photoshop open while watching the tutorials.  I found that this really helped since I could watch the video and work on a few of my own shots at the same time.  This really helps to reinforce the material that is covered.  I love having dual monitors!

I highly recommend this DVD series and feel that anyone who’s interested in getting more out of their printing will be hugely satisfied.  I know that my prints look better already!

Vincent Versace’s Welcome to Oz has to be one of the best photography books that I have come across in a very long time.
