Building an online print business from your photoblog

March 17th, 2009 by brett

As most of you know by now, one of my main goals has always been to build a print business based on my photoblog (although you’d never know that based on the number of recent updates!).  There’s a great (albeit short) article in this month’s PDN magazine which describes several photographer’s experiences while trying to sell prints from a website.  You can check out the audio slideshow here, and I would encourage you to check out the following sites.

Cole Thompson – Cole built his online business with a ton of hardwork and some SEO!

Thomas D. Mangelsen – A little bit of a stretch when you’re just getting started, but it’s something to shoot for!

Looking for inspiration?

February 24th, 2009 by brett

So it’s winter, and sometimes it can be very hard to get behind the camera and stay focused (I am speaking from about 3 months of experience).  If you’re looking for inspiration, check out Zack Arias’ website, and more importantly the video he just created for Scott Kelby…If that doesn’t inspire you…well we need to talk!

Get out there and shoot!

Thanks for the heads up Bob

Gallery Promotion – finally!

February 19th, 2009 by brett

Ok, so I know that I have been slacking off lately – badly, but I finally managed to get the Gallery Promotion page up – well at least a place holder for it…

Here’s my idea.  If your (or someone you know) work is being displayed in a gallery or is scheduled to be displayed, let me know, and I will post details about it here…

Behind the Lens Holiday mailerI am a big fan of Chase Jarvis’ blog for a number of reasons, the first being that I find his posts very informative, and secondly inspirational – hence this post.  After reading about his totally awesome holiday mailer, I decided to share my own experience’s with my own holiday mailer.

Print exchange – what a great idea!

February 3rd, 2009 by brett

So, I’ve been procrastinating again, and decided to check out one of my favourite photoblogs, wastedphotos (the profile questions are coming Brad – I promise!) and was blown away by a super simple idea Brad mentions in one of his posts – a print exchange!  What a great way to get some of your work out there in the world for others to see!

Drop by wastedphotos and check out the “Communist Photoing” post, by the way, this photoblog has some of the wittiest titles and commentary I have come across.

New Media Photographer – great blog

January 27th, 2009 by brett

Some of you know just how addicted I am to my RSS reader, and I’ve recently added a great new resource to the lists of blogs I now follow.  Rosh Stillar’s New Media Photographer is a great blog, which I think every photoblogger should be following.  If you haven’t see Rosh’s blog before, I strongly suggest you check it out today!  You won’t be disappointed.

Photoblogging in 2009

January 6th, 2009 by brett

Happy New Year everyone!

Here’s to another succesful year of photoblogging in 2009!  I have lots of changes planned for the site this year, and there are some great profiles coming shortly so stayed tune.

A new feature I am thinking of introducing this year is a forum section, where we can all discuss issues we are facing when building, updating, and promoting our photoblogs…anyone have any suggestions on what they would like to see?

My keyword spreadsheet

December 15th, 2008 by brett

A few posts back I was talking about the high bounce rate I was seeing on my photoblog, and that one of my ideas on lowering the bounce rate was to increase the “quality” of the traffic I was receiving from the search engines (mostly, Google).

In that post, I mentioned my “trusty spreadsheet” and wanted to talk a little bit more about it.  I’m making it available for download (Excel 2007) so grab a copy of your own and read on to see how I use it.
